Abstract
Insuring a constant supply of radioisotopes is of great importance to medicine and industry. This invention addresses this problem, and helps to solve it by introducing a new apparatus for transmutation of isotopes which enables swift and flexible production on demand.
Claims21
An apparatus for transmutation of target isotopes, comprising:
- a) a source of rapidly repetitive high average current ion beam pulses, wherein the average power of said ion beam pulses is greater than about 1 kilowatt;
- b) a target for said ion beam pulses comprising said target isotopes and so positioned that said ion beam pulses interact with said target isotopes;
- and
- c) means for cooling said target.

An apparatus for transmutation of target isotopes, comprising:
- a) a source of rapidly repetitive high average current ion beam pulses, wherein the ion kinetic energy of said ion beam pulses is greater than 5 MeV;
- b) a target for said ion beam pulses comprising said target isotopes and so positioned that said ion beam pulses interact with said target isotopes;
- and
- c) means for cooling said target.
1 more element
An apparatus for transmutation of target isotopes, comprising:
- a) a source of rapidly repetitive high average current deuteron ion beam pulses;
- b) a neutron source target, said neutron source target to be irradiated by said deuteron ion beam pulses, thereby producing neutrons;
- c) means for cooling said neutron source target, and;
- d) a secondary target comprising said target isotopes exposed to said neutrons.
