Display system and memory architecture and method for displaying images in windows on a video display

A computer system having a screen and capable of displaying in a portion of the screen, referred to as a window, a portion of display data generated for display on the entire screen by a computer program running on the computer system, comprising:

• (a) a first memory structure for storing data generated for display on the entire screen by the computer program, the first memory structure receiving data in a manner independent of the size and location on the screen of the window;
• (b) a second memory structure that contains data corresponding to the data stored in at least a selected portion of the first memory structure at a first point in time, wherein the portion corresponds to the display data displayed in the window;
• (c) detection means that, at a second point in time following the first point in time, compares data in the second memory structure with data in the first memory structure to determine whether a change has occurred in the data stored in the selected portion of the first memory structure between the first point in time and the second point in time;
• and
• (d) updating means for updating data displayed in the window with data corresponding to data stored in the selected portion of the first memory structure at the second point in time if the detection means determines that a change has occurred in the data stored in the selected portion of the first memory structure between the first point in time and the second point in time.

A computer system including a screen for displaying data from one or more application programs, the system comprising:

• (a) an application program that provides a full screen of data to a first memory buffer;
• (b) means for sampling the data in the first memory buffer at a first point in time and storing data sampled at the first point in time in a second memory buffer;
• (c) means for sampling the data in the first memory buffer at a second point in time following the first point in time and for comparing data sampled at the second point in time with data stored in the second memory buffer to identify differences between the data in the second memory buffer and the data sampled at the second point in time;
• and
• (d) means for writing differences between the data sampled at the first point in time and the data sampled at the second point in time to the screen.

A method, executed by a computer system having a screen, of ensuring that a window of display data taken from a full screen of display data provided by a computer program is updated in response to changes in the display data provided by the computer program, the method operating in a manner that does not require the computer program to provide an indication that its display data has changed nor to provide an indication of the nature or extent of any changes, the method comprising:

• (a) receiving display data provided by the computer program and storing the received display data in a first memory structure;
• (b) periodically sampling the display data in the first memory structure and storing sampled data in a second memory structure;
• (c) periodically comparing data in the first memory structure with data in the second memory structure to identify differences between the data stored in the fist and second memory structures;
• and
• (d) after each comparison operation referred to in subparagraph (c) in which differences are identified, writing those differences to the portion of the screen corresponding to the window if the differences in the data occur in a region of the full screen of display data that is within the window.

A method, executed by a computer system having a video display, of displaying information from an application program within a window which is capable of being displayed overlapped with other windows on the video display, said computer system having:

• (i) means for determining the size and location of the window on the video display;
• and (ii) means for receiving information to be displayed from the application program, referred to as display information, in a manner such that the application program provides information to be displayed regardless of whether all of the information is displayed in the window, the method comprising:
• (a) storing at least a portion of the display information in a pseudo screen buffer and updating the pseudoscreen buffer in response to display information provided by the application program;
• (b) storing in a previous image buffer the display information displayed within the window on the video display;
• (c) comparing display information in the previous image buffer with display information stored in the pseudoscreen buffer to identify differences between the display information displayed within the window and the display information stored in the pseudoscreen buffer;
• and
• (d) when differences between the display information in the previous image buffer and the display information in the pseudoscreen buffer are identified in a periodic comparison, then updating the display information displayed in the window and the display information in the pseudoscreen buffer to reflect the differences.

A method, executed by a computer system having a video display, of displaying information from an application program within a window which is capable of being displayed overlapped with other windows on the video display, said computer system having:

• (i) means for determining the size and location of the window on the video display;
• and (ii) means for receiving information to be displayed from the application program, referred to as display information, in a manner that does not change with change in the size and location of the window, the method comprising:
• (a) storing at least a portion of the display information in a pseudo screen buffer and updating the pseudoscreen buffer in response to display information provided by the application program;
• (b) storing in a previous image buffer the display information displayed within the window on the video display;
• (c) at periodic, timed intervals, comparing display information in the previous image buffer with display information stored in the pseudoscreen buffer to identify differences between the display information displayed within the window and the display information stored in the pseudoscreen buffer;
• and
• (d) if differences between the display information in the previous image buffer and the display information in the pseudoscreen buffer are identified in a periodic comparison, then updating the display information displayed in the window and the display information in the pseudoscreen buffer to reflect the differences.

A method, executed by a computer system having (i) a screen, and (ii) an application program that generates information for full-screen display, referred to as display information, of displaying at least a portion of the display information in a portion of the screen, referred to as a window, said method comprising:

• (a) storing, in a previous image buffer, information being displayed in the window, referred to as existing displayed information;
• (b) receiving display information from the application program, referred to as new display information;
• (c) determining whether some or all of the new display information is to be displayed in the window, and if so, identifying that new display information as visible new display information;
• and
• (d) comparing existing displayed information with visible new display information to identify one or more locations in the window at which differences exist between the existing displayed information and the visible new display information, and for each of said one or more locations, updating the window with visible new display information.

A method for displaying information within windows which are capable of overlapping on a display of a computer controlled display system comprising the steps of

• generating windows on a display using a windowing environment;
• generating display data using an operating environment logically independent of said windowing environment;
• storing said display data in at least one pseudo screen buffer memory means;
• storing in a previous image buffer current display data associated with visible display areas of said windows;
• and
• comparing said display data in said at least one pseudo screen buffer memory means and said current display data in said previous image buffer to detect changes in said display data of said at least one pseudo screen buffer memory means.

A program storage device, readable by a machine, embodying a program of instructions executable by the machine to perform method steps for displaying output display data of a computer program running on said machine on a display, said method steps comprising:

• storing in a first memory display data written by said computer program to said first memory, said display data written without identification of changes in said display data;
• storing in a second memory display data previously stored in said first memory;
• comparing display data of said first memory and display data of said second memory at selected times to detect changes in display data of said first memory;
• updating the contents of said second memory with at least said changes;
• and
• displaying at least said changes within a window in said display.

A program storage device, readable by a machine, embodying a program of instructions executable by the machine to perform method steps for displaying output display data of a computer program running on said machine on a display, said method steps comprising:

• storing computer program output display data written by said computer program in a pseudo screen buffer, said output display data written without identification of changes in said output display data;
• storing display data previously stored in said pseudo screen buffer memory in a previous image buffer;
• comparing output display data of said pseudo screen buffer and display data of said previous image buffer at selected times to detect changes in display data of said pseudo screen buffer;
• updating a window on said display with at least said changes;
• and
• updating the contents of said previous image buffer with at least said changes.

A program storage device, readable by a machine, embodying a program of instructions executable by the machine to perform method steps for displaying output display data of a computer program running on said machine on a display, said method steps comprising:

• storing current computer program output display data written by said computer program in at least one pseudo screen buffer, said output display data written without identification of changes in said output display data;
• storing display data previously stored in said pseudo screen buffer in at least one previous image buffer;
• comparing output display data of said pseudo screen buffer and display data of said previous image buffer at selected intervals to detect changes in display data of said pseudo screen buffer;
• transforming coordinate locations of display data stored in said pseudo screen buffer to correspond with associated coordinate locations of a window on said display;
• determining a region of said window that is visible on said display and displaying in said region at least said changes that are associated with said region;
• and
• updating the contents of said previous image buffer with at least said changes.

A program storage device, readable by a machine, embodying a program of instructions executable by the machine to perform method steps for displaying output display data of a computer program running on said machine on a display, said method steps comprising:

• storing in a first memory display data written by said computer program to said first memory, said display data written without identification of changes in said display data;
• storing in a second memory display data previously stored in said first memory;
• comparing display data of said first memory and display data of said second memory at selected times to detect changes in display data of said first memory;
• updating said second memory with at least said changes;
• transforming the coordinate locations of display data stored in said first memory means to correspond with coordinate locations of a window on said display;
• and
• determining a region of said window that is visible on said display and displaying in said region at least said changes that are associated with said region.
