Abstract
There is disclosed an azetidinone compound of the formula I!: ##STR1## wherein Ring B is a benzene ring which may have substituent(s), R.sup.1 is a hydroxy-substituted lower alkyl group which may have substituent(s), X is oxygen atom and the like, Y is oxygen atom and the like, and Z is a methylene group which may have substituent(s), which is useful as a synthetic intermediate of the 1 .beta.-methylcarbapenem-type antibacterial agent. cl CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

A process for preparing an azetidinonepropionic acid compound of the formula (XII):
- ##STR78## wherein R.sup.1 is a hydroxy-substituted lower alkyl group in which the hydroxy group may be protected by a hydroxy protecting group, or a salt thereof, which comprises hydrolyzing an azetidinone compound of the formula (I):
- ##STR79## wherein ring B is a benzene ring which may have substituent(s), X is oxygen atom or sulfur atom, Y is oxygen atom, sulfur atom, methylene group or an imino group which may have substituent(s), Z is a methylene group which may have substituent(s), and R.sup.1 is the same as defined above, or a salt thereof, and if required, further converting the product into a salt thereof.
