Abstract
A motion detector and a motion area detector detect shifts of areas at which motions exist by using signals of fields before and after the field to be detected. According to shifts of the detected areas, an initial vector closest to the true motion is selected among prospective initial vectors produced at an initial vector selector or an initial vector detector by a block matching method, thereby reducing detection errors in motion vectors occurring at a time of the detection of motion vectors, and thereby improving accuracy of motion vectors, so that image distortions would reduced in an interpolating process.

A method of detecting a motion vector for each block of each field of a digitized video signal, the digitized video signal being divided into successive fields, each field being subdivided into plural blocks, the motion vector of each block being a sum of an initial vector and an optimum vector, the method comprising the steps of:
- a. detecting movement of a picture at a block using signals located away from one another by at least one field to provide an output signal, delaying the output signal for a set time period, and judging whether the block is in a transition area between movement and stillness in the picture, using the delayed output signal;
- and
- b. if the block is in a transition area according to said step a, then, according to a condition of the transition area, selecting and performing one of the following steps to detect the motion vector
- 1. producing plural prospective initial vectors from among motion vectors for other blocks and selecting the initial vector from among the produced plural prospective initial vectors, calculating the optimum vector from the selected initial vector, and determining the motion vector as the sum of the selected initial vector and the calculated optimum vector, and
- 2. detecting a provisional motion vector of the block, producing the initial vector from the detected provisional motion vector, calculating the optimum vector from the produced initial vector, and determining the motion vector as the sum of the produced initial vector and the calculated optimum vector.
An apparatus for detecting a motion vector for each block of each field of a digitized video signal, the digitized video signal being divided into successive fields, each field being subdivided into plural blocks, the motion vector of each block being a sum of an initial vector and an optimum vector, the apparatus comprising:
- means for detecting movement of a picture using signals located away from one another by at least one field to provide an output signal;
- means for delaying the output signal for a set time period;
- means for judging whether a block is in a transition area which is an area of transition between movement and stillness in the picture, using the delayed output signal;
- and
- means for determining the motion vector when the block is judged by the judging means to be in a transition area, including
- first initial vector obtaining means for producing plural prospective initial vectors from among motion vectors for other blocks and for selecting the initial vector from among the produced plural prospective initial vectors,
- second initial vector obtaining means for detecting a provisional motion vector of the block and for producing the initial vector from the detected provisional motion vector,
- means for choosing either the initial vector selected by said first initial vector obtaining means or the initial vector produced by the second initial vector obtaining means according to a condition of the transition area,
- means for calculating the optimum vector from the chosen initial vector, and
- means for adding the chosen initial vector and the calculated optimum vector to determine the motion vector.
