Abstract
The present invention discloses new processes in the preparation of midazolam (VII), ##STR1## a commercially important pharmaceutical, as well a new intermediates in those processes from a known benzophenone (I) starting material.

8-Chl oro-6-(2-fluorophenyl)-3a,4-dihydro-1-methyl-3H-imidazo1,5-a!1,4!benzodia zepine-5-oxide (IX).
A process for the production of midazolam (VII)
- which comprises:
- (1) contacting 8-chloro-3,4-dihydro-6-(2-fluorophenyl)-1-methyl4H-imidazo1,5-a!benzodiaz epine (VI) with TPAP.
