Abstract
Novel fire-retardant electrolyte compositions are provided. These compositions comprise a lithium salt dissolved in a fire-retardant solvent selected from the group consisting of phosphates, phospholanes, cyclophosphazenes, silanes, fluorinated carbonates, fluorinated polyethers and mixtures thereof. The electrolyte composition optionally contains a CO.sub.2 -generating compound. Also provided are fire-retardant batteries and fire-retardant conductive films formulated with such compositions, as well as methods of manufacturing such films.
Claims13
A battery comprising an electrolyte having conductivity greater than 10.sup.-3 S cm.sup.-1 at ambient temperature, and which includes a compound which generates CO.sub.2 as a fire-retardant gas, upon decomposition.
The battery of claim 14 wherein the phosphate having the following structure:
- I ##STR29## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of (a) C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl terminally substituted with 0 to 3 halogen atoms and containing 0 to 3 ether linkages, (b) Si(R.sup.4).sub.3 and (c) B(OR.sup.4).sub.2 wherein the R.sup.4 s are independently C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl containing 0 to 3 ether linkages or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkoxy, and optionally wherein two or more compounds of structure (I) are linked together by an ether linkage.
Dependencies are inferred from the claim text.
