Abstract
An essentially anhydrous agitated mixture of (i) finely-divided essentially anhydrous alkali metal fluoride (e.g., KF), (ii) haloaromatic compound having at least one halogen atom of atomic number greater than 9 on an aromatic ring (e.g., C.sub.6 Cl.sub.6), and (iii) an aminophosphonium catalyst (e.g., (Et.sub.2 N).sub.4 PBr), is heated at a temperature at which fluorine replaces one or more of the ring halogen atom of the haloaromatic compound.
Claims30
A halogen exchange process which comprises heating an essentially anhydrous agitated mixture formed from ingredients comprising (i) at least one finely-divided essentially anhydrous alkali metal fluoride, (ii) at least one haloaromatic compound having at least one halogen atom of atomic number greater than 9 on an aromatic ring, and (iii) an aminophosphonium catalyst, at one or more reaction temperatures at which at least one said halogen atom of said haloaromatic compound is replaced by a fluorine atom.
A halogen exchange process which comprises:
- a) forming a mixture from ingredients comprising (i) at least one finely-divided alkali metal fluoride in which the alkali metal atoms have an atomic number of 19 or more, (ii) at least one haloaromatic compound having at least one halogen atom of atomic number greater than 9 on an aromatic ring which is devoid of any activating functional group in the molecule, and (iii) an aminophosphonium catalyst;
- b) heating the mixture with agitation at one or more reaction temperatures at which and for a period of time during which at least one said halogen atom of said haloaromatic compound is replaced by a fluorine atom;
- and
- c) recovering at least one haloaromatic compound in which at least one said halogen atom thereof has been replaced by a fluorine atom.
