Abstract
A paper web and method of making the paper web are disclosed. In one embodiment the paper web includes a continuation relatively thinner region and a plurality of discrete relatively thicker regions. The relatively thicker regions are disposed in the plane of the relatively thinner region. The paper web can have a relatively patterned face and a relatively smooth face. The paper structures can be dried relatively quickly and efficiently, and can provide enchanced absorbency and bulk density while having a relatively smooth face.
Claims12
A method of forming a paper web, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing an aqueous dispersion of papermaking fibers;
- providing a foraminous forming member;
- depositing the aqueous dispersion of papermaking fibers on the foraminous forming member;
- forming an embryonic web of the papermaking fibers on the foraminous forming member, the embryonic web having a first surface and a second surface;
- providing a web support apparatus having a web facing side comprising a first web contacting surface and a second web contacting surface, wherein a difference in elevation between the first and second web contacting surfaces is less than the thickness of the embryonic web;
- transferring the embryonic web from the foraminous forming member to the web support apparatus wherein the first surface of the web is supported on the first and second web contacting surfaces of the web support apparatus;
- imparting a predetermined pattern to the first surface of the web at a web consistency of between about 10 and about 60 percent;
- providing a heated drying surface;
- transferring the web to the heated drying surface at a web consistency of between about 20 and about 60 percent, wherein substantially all the second surface of the web is positioned adjacent the heated drying surface;
- and
- creping the web from the heated drying surface.
A method of forming a paper web comprising the steps of:
- providing an aqueous dispersion of papermaking fibers;
- providing a foraminous forming member;
- depositing the aqueous dispersion of papermaking fibers on the foraminous forming member;
- forming an embryonic web of the papermaking fibers on the foraminous forming member, the embryonic web having a first surface and a substantially smooth, macroscopically monoplanar second surface;
- providing a web support apparatus having a web facing side comprising first web contacting surface and a second web contacting surface, wherein a difference in elevation between the first and second web contacting surfaces is less than the thickness of the embryonic web;
- transferring the embryonic web from the foraminous forming member to the web support apparatus wherein the first surface of the web is supported on the first and second web contacting surfaces of the web support apparatus;
- imparting a predetermined pattern to the first surface of the web while maintaining the second surface of the web in a substantially smooth, macroscopically monoplanar configuration;
- providing a heated drying surface;
- positioning the substantially smooth, macroscopically monoplanar second face of the web adjacent the heated drying surface;
- drying the web on the heated drying surface;
- and
- creping the web from the drying surface.
A method of forming a paper web comprising the steps of:
- providing an aqueous dispersion of papermaking fibers;
- providing a foraminous forming member;
- depositing the aqueous dispersion of papermaking fibers on the foraminous forming member;
- forming an embryonic web of the papermaking fibers on the foraminous forming member, the embryonic web having a first surface and a substantially smooth, macroscopically monoplanar second surface;
- providing a web support apparatus having a web facing side comprising first web contacting surface and a second web contacting surface, wherein a difference in elevation between the first and second web contacting surfaces is less than the thickness of the embryonic web;
- providing a vacuum pressure roll;
- transferring the embryonic web from the foraminous forming member to the web support apparatus;
- providing a heated drying surface;
- directing the web and the web support apparatus between the vacuum pressure roll and the heated drying surface, wherein the first web face is positioned against the web support apparatus and the substantially smooth, macroscopically monoplanar second face of the web is positioned against the heated drying surface, and wherein the web support apparatus is positioned adjacent the vacuum pressure roll;
- adhering the second face of the web to the heated drying surface;
- drying the web on the heated drying surface;
- and
- creping the web from the heated drying surface.
