Abstract
A doubly-fed switched reluctance machine in which at least two sets of phase winding are energized to produce desired output torque is disclosed. Also disclosed are dual and single power converters for energizing the doubly-fed machine as well as exemplary excitation schemes position. Sensorless techniques and systems for controlling the doubly-fed machine, and other machines having fully-pitched or fractional-pitched windings, are also disclosed.

A reluctance machine comprising:
- a stator defining a plurality of stator poles and a plurality of stator slots;
- a rotor defining a plurality of rotor poles;
- a first set of at least two phase windings positioned within the stator, each phase winding in the first set of phase windings comprising at least two winding coils positioned within the stator slots, each such winding coil surrounding one stator pole, and each stator pole being surrounded by a coil from a phase winding in the first set;
- and
- a second set of at least two phase windings positioned within the stator, each phase winding in the second set of phase windings comprising at least one winding coil positioned within the stator slots, each such winding coil surrounding more than one stator pole;
- wherein each phase winding in the first set establishes a magnetic field having a given orientation when positive electric current is applied to the phase winding, and wherein, for each phase winding in the first set, there is a corresponding phase winding in the second set that establishes a magnetic field having said given orientation when positive electric current is applied to the phase winding in the second set;
- and wherein the coils for corresponding phase windings in the first and second sets do not share any stator slots.
A reluctance machine comprising:
- a stator defining a plurality of stator poles;
- a rotor defining a plurality of rotor poles;
- a first set of short-pitched phase windings positioned within the stator, each short-pitched phase winding comprising a plurality of short-pitched coils, and wherein the short-pitched coils are arranged within the stator such that each stator pole is surrounded by a short-pitched coil;
- and
- a second set of fully-pitched phase windings positioned within the stator;
- wherein, for a first short-pitched phase winding in the first set there is a corresponding first phase winding in the second set of fully-pitched phase windings, wherein energization of the first short-pitched phase winding with positive electric current establishes a magnetic field that is in direct alignment with the magnetic field established when the first phase winding in the second set is energized with positive electric current.
A reluctance machine comprising:
- a stator defining a plurality of stator poles;
- a rotor defining a plurality of rotor poles;
- a first set of short-pitched phase windings positioned within the stator, each short-pitched phase winding comprising a plurality of short-pitched coils, and wherein the short-pitched coils are arranged within the stator such that each stator pole is surrounded by a short-pitched coil;
- and
- a second set of fully-pitched phase windings positioned within the stator;
- wherein, for a first short-pitched phase winding in the first set, there is a corresponding first phase winding in the second set of fully-pitched phase windings, wherein energization of the first short-pitched phase winding with positive electric current establishes a magnetic field that has an alignment directly opposite the magnetic field established when the first phase winding in the second set is energized with positive electric current.
A reluctance machine comprising:
- a rotor;
- a stator, the stator defining a plurality of stator poles;
- a first set of short-pitched phase windings positioned within the stator, each of the short-pitched phase windings comprising a plurality of short-pitched winding coils, the short-pitched coils being positioned within the stator such that each stator pole is surrounded by a short-pitched winding coil;
- and
- a second set of fully-pitched phase windings positioned within the stator, each of the fully-pitched phase windings comprising a fully-pitched winding coil;
- wherein the short-pitched winding coils from one of the short-pitched phase windings are electrically connected to the fully-pitched winding coil of one of the fully-pitched phase windings to form a separately energizable chain of electrically connected winding coils such that energization of the one short-pitched phase winding necessarily energizes the one fully-pitched phase winding.
A doubly-fed reluctance machine system comprising:
- a reluctance machine comprising:
- a first set of phase windings, each phase winding in the first set comprising at least two short-pitched winding coils, and a second set of phase windings, each phase winding in the second set comprising at least one winding coil surrounding more than one stator pole;
- wherein each phase winding in the first set of phase windings corresponds to a given phase winding in the second set of phase windings and where corresponding phase windings from the first and second sets are electrically connected such that energization of a phase winding in the first set necessarily energizes the corresponding phase winding in the second set;
- and
- a single excitation converter that simultaneously provides energizing current to the electrical connections of the phase windings from both the first and second sets.
