Abstract
The present invention relates to an optical amplifier and a telecommunication system including a plurality of the optical amplifiers connected in cascade, particularly adapted for a wavelength division multiplexing transmission, in which a combination of dopants in the active fiber core of the optical amplifiers enables a high signal/noise ratio to be achieved for all channels in a predetermined wavelength band, even in the presence of several simultaneously fed signals.
Claims10
An active optical fiber, for use in a laser-pumped optical telecommunications amplifier comprising:
- a core;
- at least one main fluorescent dopant in said core;
- and
- at least one secondary dopant in said core including an oxide of lanthanum, said main dopant and said secondary dopant having relative characteristics such that emission power of the fiber in a wavelength band including 1550 nm has a main emission peak and a secondary emission peak when optical pumping energy of about 980 nm is supplied to the fiber, the emission power at the secondary emission peak not exceeding by more than 1 dB the emission power at all wavelengths between the main emission peak and the secondary emission peak.
An active optical fiber, for use in a laser-pumped optical telecommunications amplifier comprising:
- a core;
- at least one main fluorescent dopant in said core;
- and
- at least one secondary dopant in said core, the doped fiber producing emission across a first wavelength band of about 1530 nm to 1560 nm in response to an optical pumping energy of about 980 nm, the first band including a wavelength of peak emission and a second wavelength band, the second band containing all wavelengths within the first band greater than the peak emission wavelength, emission power at each wavelength within the second band not exceeding by more than 1 dB emission power at wavelengths between said each wavelength and said peak emission wavelength.
An active-fiber optical amplifier, comprising:
- at least one length of silica-based active fiber having one main fluorescent dopant and at least one secondary dopant including an oxide of lanthanum, aluminum, and germanium;
- and
- a pump coupled to provide optical pumping power to said active fiber.
A method of amplifying wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signals, comprising the steps of:
- inputting first and second WDM signals of different wavelengths within a band of about 1535 nm to 1560 nm into an active-fiber optical amplifier having one main fluorescent dopant and at least one secondary dopant including an oxide of lanthanum, aluminum, and germanium;
- and
- pumping simultaneously the active-fiber with light.
