Abstract
Disclosed are dimensionally stable eyeglass orbitals, pivotably mounted in an eyeglass frame. In one embodiment, the eyeglass orbitals are investment cast from substantially pure titanium or a titanium based alloy. The orbitals hold the lenses in the as-worn orientation such that the optical centerline of each lens extends in a predetermined relationship with respect to the wearer's theoretical straight ahead line of sight.
Claims21
An oriented, biased eyeglass frame, comprising:
- a bifurcated left orbital and a bifurcated right orbital for supporting a left lens and a right lens, respectively, each of said left and right orbitals comprising a lateral component and a medial component;
- a bridge connected to the right and left orbitals;
- a left earstem connected to the left orbital and a right earstem connected to the right orbital;
- at least one biased left connector between the lateral component and the medial component of the left orbital;
- and
- at least one biased right connector between the lateral component and the medial component of the right orbital;
- wherein the right and left connectors permit limited movement of the lateral component of the right orbital with respect to the lateral component of the left orbital upon application of an external force;
- and the left and right connectors return the left and right orbitals to a predetermined orientation upon removal of the external force.

An eyeglass frame, comprising:
- a first orbital;
- a second orbital;
- a bridge connecting the first and second orbitals;
- first and second biased connectors attached to the bridge for maintaining the first and second orbitals in a predetermined orientation with respect to each other;
- and
- a first earstem having an anterior end, a posterior end and a fulcrum for pivotal attachment to the first orbital, wherein the fulcrum is positioned at least about 0.25 inches from the anterior end of the earstem,
- wherein the first and second orbitals are moveable from the predetermined orientation to a second orientation by pivoting the eyeglass frame at the first and second connectors, and when in the second orientation the eyeglass frame is biased toward the predetermined orientation.
