Abstract
An apparatus for monitoring a substance in a living organism. The apparatus can be used to provide an assessment of the feeding rate of the organism and can be used to measure water toxicity.

A device for detecting a fluorescent substance tagged to a living microorganism comprising:
- a flow carrier system for transporting the microorganism past a selected location;
- a source of electromagnetic radiation for irradiating the substance tagged to the microorganism;
- and
- a detection system for measuring fluorescent light emitted from the substance at the selected location.

A device for assessing the amount of a fluorescent substance associated with an animal, comprising:
- a flow carrier for transporting the animal to a selected location;
- a source of electromagnetic radiation for irradiating the substance associated with the animal;
- and
- a detector for measuring light emitted from the substance at the selected location.
