Abstract
An optical fiber having a single mode absorptive core whose position, relative to the cross sectional plane of the inner multimode cladding, varies along the length of the fiber. The periodicity and the magnitude of the relative displacement of the core with respect to the cladding are such that the transfer of radiation from the inner multimode cladding to the core is substantially improved over conventional fibers.
Claims31
A double clad optical fibre comprising a substantially single mode core doped with an active lasant material and having a refractive index n.sub.1, an inner multimode cladding surrounding said core having a refractive index n.sub.2, and an outer cladding surrounding said inner multimode cladding having a refractive index n.sub.3, where n.sub.3 <n.sub.2 <n.sub.1, the position of said core relative to a cross sectional plane of said inner multimode cladding varies transversely in a continuous manner along the length of the fibre for increasing the efficiency of coupling of multimode radiation out of said inner multimode cladding into said core.
A double clad optical fibre comprising a substantially single mode core having a refractive index, n.sub.1 and comprising a first waveguide region, an inner multimode cladding having a refractive index n.sub.2, where n.sub.1 >n.sub.2 surround said core and comprising a second waveguide region, an outer cladding having a refractive index, n.sub.3, surrounding said inner multimode cladding where n.sub.2 >n.sub.3, the transverse position of said single mode core within said inner multimode cladding relative to an axial central region of said inner multimode cladding continuously varying from said axial central region along at least a portion of the length of the fibre for increasing the efficiency of coupling radiation out of said second waveguide region into said first waveguide region.
