Pharmaceuticals compositions containing gellants in the form of alkyl amides of di-and tri-carboxylic acids

A pharmaceutical composition comprising:

• A.) a safe and effective amount of at least one pharmaceutical active;
• B.) a gellant of the formula:
• ##STR8## a) R.sub.1 is nil, hydroxy, hydrogen, aryl, siloxane or saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, straight, branched or cyclic chain C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkenyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl esters, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl ethers, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl substituted aryl;
• b) R.sub.2, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are independently or together, hydrogen, hydroxy, aryl, siloxane or saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, straight, branched or cyclic chain C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkenyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl esters, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl ethers, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl substituted aryl;
• c) R.sub.3 is nil, hydroxy, hydrogen, saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, straight, branched or cyclic chain C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkenyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl esters or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl ethers;
• d) R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are independently or together, nil, hydrogen, hydroxy, aryl, siloxane or saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, straight, branched or cyclic chain C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkenyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl esters, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl ethers, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl substituted aryl;
• e) R.sub.9 is nil or hydrogen;
• f) R.sub.10 and R.sub.11 are independently or together, nil, hydrogen, hydroxy, aryl, siloxane or saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, straight, branched or cyclic chain C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkenyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl esters, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl ethers, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted aryl;
• g) X is nil, nitrogen, aryl or .paren open-st.CH.sub.2 .paren close-st..sub.n where n is an integer from 1 to 6;
• h) Y is nil, acyl or carbonyl;
• i) Z is nil, hydrogen, hydroxy, aryl, siloxane, nitrogen or saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, straight, branched or cyclic chain C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkenyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl esters, C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl ethers, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl substituted aryl;
• and
• j) "a" is a double or single bond provided:
• (i) when X is nil, Y, Z, R.sub.3, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are nil, C' is bonded directly to C" and R.sub.1 is not a hydrogen;
• (ii) when X and Z are not nil and Y is nil, X is directly bonded to Z;
• (iii) when Z is nil, a hydrogen or a hydroxy, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are nil;
• and
• (iv) when "a" is a double bond, R.sub.3 and R.sub.9 are nil;
• and
• C.) an anhydrous liquid carrier.
