Abstract
A therapeutic treatment method includes the steps of providing a pulsed incoherent light output for treatment, directing the pulsed light output to a treatment area, transmitting the pulsed light output through the epidermis at the treatment area, heating the epidermis to a temperature below the temperature at which the epidermis is damaged, and coagulating blood in blood vessels disposed below the epidermis.
Claims40
A method for coagulating blood in a blood vessel lying below an epidermal layer, comprising the steps of:
- generating a pulse of electromagnetic energy;
- varying the wavelength of electromagnetic energy;
- applying the pulse to the epidermal layer at a rate and for a time insufficient to heat the epidermal layer to a first temperature at which the epidermal layer is damaged, and sufficient to heat the blood vessel to a second temperature greater than the first temperature;
- controlling a delay between the pulse and a subsequent pulse of electromagnetic energy;
- and
- coagulating blood in the blood vessel.
A method for coagulating blood in a blood vessel lying below an epidermal layer, comprising the steps of:
- generating a pulse of electromagnetic energy;
- applying the pulse to the epidermal layer at a rate and for a time insufficient to heat the epidermal layer to a temperature at which the epidermal layer is damaged and sufficient to heat the blood vessel;
- pausing while the epidermis cools below the temperature achieved in the applying step;
- repeating the steps of generating, applying and pausing until the blood in the blood vessel is heated and coagulated.
