Abstract
The present invention is an apparatus for separating volatile from nonvolatile substances, separation of volatile substances, one from the other, and for performing various chemical reactions. In particular, an apparatus which performs these functions utilizing a combination of above ambient temperatures and above one inch of mercury vacuum within a rotating vessel. The apparatus uses a conventional rotary vacuum seal. The apparatus, however, operates well above the maximum operating temperature of the conventional rotary vacuum seal by isolating and cooling the conventional rotary vacuum seal.
Claims25
A chemical processing and reaction apparatus for extracting as volatilized gases one or more substances from a material containing the one or more substances, the chemical processing and reaction apparatus comprising:
- a retort adapted to rotate about a central axis, the material being disposed within retort;
- a sleeve integral with the retort and extending therefrom;
- a off-gas tube adapted to receive volatilized gases from the retort
- a rotary seal disposed in the sleeve connecting the sleeve to the off-gas tube;
- a rotating device in communication with the retort adapted to drive the retort in a rotational motion;
- a vacuum device in communication with the retort adapted to generate a vacuum between about 2.25 mmHg and 7.35 mmHg within the retort, thereby lowering a boiling point of the one or more substances and for drawing the volatilized gases into the off-gas;
- tube and
- a heating device in communication with the retort adapted to heat the material in the retort to a temperature sufficient to volatilize the one or more the substances into the volatilized gases.
A chemical processing and reaction apparatus for extracting as volatilized gases one or more substances from a material containing the one or more substances, the chemical processing and reaction apparatus comprising;
- vessel means rotatable about a central axis for holding the material, the material being disposed within the vessel means;
- off-gas means for receiving the volatilized gases from the vessel means;
- a rotary vacuum seal disposed between the vessel means and the off-gas means;
- a cooling means for cooling the rotary vacuum seal;
- rotating means for rotating the vessel means;
- vacuum means for generating a vacuum within the vessel means, thereby lowering a boiling point of the one or more substances and for drawing the volatilized gases into the off-gas means;
- and
- heating means for heating the material within the vessel means to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the one or more substances to the volatilized gases.
A chemical processing and reaction apparatus for extracting as vaporized gases one or more substances from a material containing the one or more substances, the chemical processing and reaction apparatus comprising:
- a vessel device adapted to rotate about a central axis;
- a vacuum device adapted to generate a vacuum between about 2.25 mm Hg and 735 mmHg within the vessel device such that the vaporized gases can be removed from the vessel device without sweep gases substantially upon generation of the vaporized gases;
- and
- heating device for heating the material to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the one or more substances as vaporized gases.
