Abstract
The invention describes a whole .beta.-glucan drug delivery vehicle that non-specifically enhances the immune response, and is safe for human use. A drug is incorporated into a whole .beta.-glucan microparticle, and the combination is administered to an individual. The .beta.-glucan vehicle allows sustained release of the drug component while simultaneously enhancing the effectiveness of the drug by boosting the individual's endogenous immune response.
Claims2
A bioerodible composition for administration to a mammal comprising;
- a) bioerodible whole .beta.-glucan particles which are hollow spheres comprised of a semi-permeable glucan matrix;
- and
- b) a drug which is capable of being incorporated within each of the whole .beta.-glucan particles by natural diffusion;
- said drug contained within or dispersed in the whole .beta.-glucan particles, which composition, when placed in a physiological environment releases the drug over time into the physiological environment and wherein said whole .beta.-glucan particles bioerode in the physiological environment.
