Abstract
Compositions and methods for improving the characteristics of foundry cores which includes adding to a foundry aggregate mixture polyurethane resin binder comprising epoxy resin and, preferably, paraffinic oil.
Claims24
A urethane foundry binder, which is resistant to water based coatings, comprising a mixture of:
- a polyhydroxy phenolic resole resin component;
- and
- an isocyanate component comprising as least one polyisocyanate, said components present in amounts sufficient to produce a cured urethane binder by reaction between the phenolic resin component and the isocyanate component in the presence of a curing catalyst;
- wherein said binder comprises an epoxy resin, which is soluble in the mixture and has a functionality of at least 2, and a paraffinic oil, wherein the paraffinic oil comprises about 0.1 to about 25 weight percent of the binder.
