## Abstract

The present invention provides a connecting member for facilitating connecting of optical fibers, and a connecting method in which the loss due to connecting is small. An optical fiber connecting member is composed of: a retaining portion having through-holes each of which has an inner diameter slightly larger than the outer diameter of optical fibers to be connected; and introduction portions which are integrally formed with and on the opposite end sides of the retaining portion and each of which has introduction grooves communicated with the through-holes to thereby make it easy to insert ends of the optical fibers into the through-holes. Further, the inner diameter of each of the through-holes is reduced by heating the connecting member to thereby make axis alignment of the optical fibers automatically to obtain connecting in which the connecting loss is reduced.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An optical fiber connecting member for connecting optical fibers by facing end portions of a least one pair of optical fibers, comprising a rod-shaped body having:
at least one through-hole in which said optical fibers are inserted, the cross-section of each said through-hole being approximately circular and slightly larger than the diameter of said optical fibers;
introduction portions being formed at opposite end portions of said rod-shaped body, in each of which at least one half of a cross-section of said through-hole is removed and remaining portion of said cross-section is provided in the form of at least one introduction groove for guiding end portions of said optical fibers into said through-hole; and
a retaining portion for retaining said optical fibers inserted in said through-hole, the cross-section of said retaining-portion being circular.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

An optical fiber connecting member according to claim 1, wherein said rod-shaped body has a plurality of through-holes, said through-holes being arranged symmetrically about the center of the cross-section of said retaining portion.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

An optical fiber connecting member according to claim 1, wherein a cross-sectional area of said introduction groove in said introduction portion is equal to or less than a half of a cross-sectional area of said through-hole.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

An optical fiber connecting member according to claim 1, wherein said introduction grooves in said introduction portion are formed in the same side at opposite end portions of said rod-shaped body.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

An optical fiber connecting member according to claim 1, wherein positioning grooves are provided axially in the outer surface of the retaining portion.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

An optical fiber connecting member according to claim 1, wherein a small-diameter portion having a diameter smaller than an outer diameter of each optical fiber is provided in an intermediate portion of said through-hole.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

An optical fiber connecting member according to claim 1, wherein said connecting member is formed from silica glass which is nearly equal in thermal expansion coefficient to glass optical fibers to be connected, and said connecting member contains SiO.sub.2 as a main component.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

An optical fiber connecting member according to claim 7, characterized in that the softening temperature of the connecting member formed from silica glass is lower than the softening temperature of glass optical fibers to be connected.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

An optical fiber connecting member according to claim 8, wherein said connecting member formed from silica glass contains at least one of a hydroxyl group, a fluorine, a chlorine and a titanium to reduce the softening temperature of said connecting member.

### Claim 10

An optical fiber connecting member for connecting optical fibers by facing end portions of a least one pair of optical fibers, comprising a rod-shaped body having:
at least one through-hole in which said optical fibers are inserted;
introduction portions being formed at opposite end portions of said rod-shaped body, in each which at least one half of a cross-section of said through-hole is removed and remaining portion of said cross-section is provided in the form of at least one introduction groove for guiding end portions of said optical fibers into said through-hole;
a retaining portion for retaining said optical fibers inserted in said through-hole; and
a spherical body formed from the same material as the material of said optical fibers is provided in an intermediate portion of said through-hole.

### Claim 11

An optical fiber connecting member for connecting optical fibers by facing end portions of a least one pair of optical fibers, comprising a rod-shaped body having;
at least one through-hole in which said optical fibers are inserted;
introduction portions being formed at opposite end portions of said rod-shaped body, in each of which at least one half of a cross-section of said through-hole is removed and remaining portion of said cross-section is provided in the form of at least one introduction groove for guiding end portions of said optical fibers into said through-hole;
a retaining portion for retaining said optical fibers inserted in said through-hole; and
