Abstract
Compressive residual stresses can be developed by underwater plasma transferred arc welding. The development of these compressive stresses act to prevent hot cracking and He embrittlement that can develop during welding or stress corrosion cracking that can develop subsequent to the welding operation.
Claims7
A process for developing residual compressive stresses in metals selected from the group consisting of stainless steels and nickel base superalloys;
- the process comprising:
- forming a pool of molten metal adjacent unmelted metal;
- cooling the pool to form a metallurgical bond with the adjacent unmelted metal;
- and
- quenching metallurgically bonded metal to an ambient temperature below the melting range of the metal by contacting the metallurgically bonded metal with a quenching medium.

A method for developing residual compressive stresses in a metal article, the method comprising:
- forming a pool of molten metal on said article;
- cooling the pool of molten metal to a temperature below the incipient melting point of the metal;
- and
- quenching solidified metal by contacting the solidified metal with a quenching medium.
