Methods of preparing carbene compounds of the formula ##STR1## are disclosed wherein M is Os or Ru; R and R.sup.1 are independently selected from hydrogen and a functional group selected from the group consisting of C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkenyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkynyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, aryl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 carboxylate, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkoxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkenyloxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkynyloxy, aryloxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkoxycarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkylsulfonyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkylsulfinyl; each optionally substituted with C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, a halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkoxy or with a phenyl group optionally substituted with a halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkoxy; X and X.sup.1 are independently selected from any anionic ligand; and L and L.sup.1 are independently selected from any neutral electron donor, preferably phosphine, sulfonated phosphine, phosphite, phosphinite, phosphonite, arsine, stibine, ether, amine, amide, sulfoxide, carboxyl, nitrosyl, pyridine and thioether. Methods for using these carbene compounds to catalyze olefin metathesis reactions are also disclosed.
A method of preparing a compound of formula ##STR42## the method comprising reacting a compound of the formula (XX.sup.1 ML.sub.n L.sup.1.sub.m).sub.p with a cyclopropene of the formula ##STR43## in the presence of a solvent wherein:
A method of preparing a compound of formula ##STR44## the method comprising reacting RuCl.sub.2 (PPh.sub.3).sub.4 with 3,3-Diphenylcyclopropene in the presence of a solvent.
