Abstract
A metal-ceramic composite comprised of a metal member bonded to a ceramic oxide member through a covalent bond formed at temperatures less than 880.degree. C., and metal-ceramic composites that are so constructed that to control internal stress or increase crack-resistance within the ceramic member under applied thermal or mechanical loads to the composite, such composite with ferrite or alumina bonded sets of such metal-ceramic computers and end use devices including printed circuit boards, EMI shields and higher level assemblies including such devices.
Claims22
A printed circuit board comprising a metal member directly bonded to a ceramic member via a covalent bond, the bond being formed at less than 500.degree. C., the metal member and the ceramic member providing heat dissipation for at least one SIC mounted on the metal member and the metal member providing electrical conductivity for the at least one SIC mounted on the metal member, the metal member having a 3 microns or less surface roughness and a hardness of 40 to 100 Kg/mm.sup.2,
- the ceramic member comprising a ceramic medium whose precursors have been mixed at the molecular level.
A printed circuit board comprising a metal member with a surface portion bonded directly to a multi-ceramic-component ceramic layer via a covalent bond and another distinct surface portion of the metal member being bonded to a SIC mounted on the metal member, the covalent bond being formed at less than 500.degree. C., the metal layer and the ceramic layer providing heat dissipation for said SIC mounted on the metal member and the metal member providing electrical conductivity for said SIC, and
- the ceramic layer being made of a multi-ceramic-component medium whose precursors have been mixed at the molecular level at the metal surface as applied and pyrolized simultaneously during application to avoid segregation or sequential decomposition of mixed species of ceramics and their precursors.
