## Abstract

The quaternary Zintl material (Et.sub.4 N).sub.4 ›Au(Ag.sub.1-x Au.sub.x).sub.2 Sn.sub.2 Te.sub.9 ! that contains 1-D semiconducting chains composed of four metallic elements is prepared by treating ethylenediamine extracts of a pentanary K--Au--Ag--Sn--Te alloy with Et.sub.4 NI.

## Claims

### Claim 1

The composition (Et.sub.4 N).sub.4 ›Au(Ag.sub.1-x Au.sub.x).sub.2 Sn.sub.2 Te.sub.9 ! where Et.sub.4 N is tetraethylammonium and x=0.32.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 further characterized by one-dimensional chains of ›Au(Ag.sub.1-x Au.sub.x).sub.2 Sn.sub.2 Te.sub.9 !.sup.4-.

### Claim 3 (depends on 3)

The composition of claim 3 further characterized in that each chain contains a ›Au--Te--Te--Te!.sub..infin. strand.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 further characterized in that it is essentially diamagnetic and nearly temperature independent down to 4 Kelvin.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

A process for preparing the composition of claim 1 that comprises the steps of:
fusing stoichiometric amounts of K.sub.2 Te, Au, Ag, Sn and Te to produce a pentanary alloy of nominal composition K.sub.6 AuAg.sub.2 Sn.sub.2 Te.sub.9 ;
crushing said alloy into a fine powder;
extracting said powder with ethylenediamine;
filtering said extract; and
adding said filtered extract to an ethylenediamine solution of Et.sub.4 NI.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The process according to claim 5 wherein said step of adding said filtered extract to said solution of E.sub.4 NI results in the formation of crystals of (E.sub.4 N).sub.4 ›Au(Ag.sub.1-x Au.sub.x).sub.2 Sn.sub.2 Te.sub.9 !.
