## Abstract

A new chemical compound, ketopantoyl aminobutyrate of formula I: ##STR1## and its salts. The compound is obtained by interaction of ketopantolactone and a salt of .gamma.-aminobutyric acid. It was shown that the new compound exhibits sedative, anti-amnesic and antihypoxic properties.

A compound of formula I: ##STR3## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

A compound according to claim 1, which is the calcium or magnesium salt of the compound of formula I.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

A compound according to claim 2, which is the calcium salt of the compound of formula I.

### Claim 4

Method for preparing a compound of formula I ##STR4## comprising condensing ketopantolactone with a salt of .gamma.-aminobutyric acid, and thereafter treating the resultant salt product with an organic or mineral acid, or a cation exchange resin in hydrogen form.

### Claim 5

Method for preparing a salt of the compound of formula I ##STR5## comprising condensing ketopantolactone with a salt of .gamma.-aminobutyric acid.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

A method according to claim 5, wherein the condensation is performed with a calcium salt of .gamma.-aminobutyric acid in alcohol at a temperature of 60.degree.-65.degree. C.
