## Abstract

A valve seat retainer is formed having a flange that extends over the valve seat and that applies both a radial and a longitudinal force to the valve seat. The flange extends an order of magnitude further than typical prior art valve seat retaining flanges. The flange is created by a rolling method with a roller having a unique surface profile. The roller surface has a pair of spaced ridges with a groove in between, and a curved convex surface adjacent to one of the ridges. When a downward force is applied to the roller, the curved surface on the roller causes the roller to move radially inward while at the same time material from the upper surface of the engine block is disposed in the groove and is moved to create the flange.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of manufacturing a valve seat retainer for an internal combustion engine having a block, comprising:
providing a roller, including
providing first and second spaced ridges on said roller;
providing a groove disposed between said first and second ridges;
providing a curved surface adjacent to said first ridge and radially outward from said groove with respect to said longitudinal axis;
placing a valve seat in a recess of said block, said valve seat having a longitudinal axis;
applying said roller to a surface of said block;
rotating said roller and changing the relative position between said roller and said block to move material from said block surface;
moving said roller in a radial direction toward said valve seat longitudinal axis during said rotating step; and
creating a flange using said moved material, said flange extending over said valve seat.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
raising said roller from said block after said creating step; and
returning said roller to a start position.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said roller has a groove, said method further comprising:
placing said moved material in said groove during said rotating step.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said applying step includes:
moving said roller against an upper surface of a cylinder head of said block.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said position changing step includes:
retaining said block in a substantially fixed position; and
orbiting said roller while said roller is rotating.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said curved surface providing step includes:
providing said curved surface with at least one of a convex or spherical surface.
