## Abstract

An optical package and methods for its use are disclosed. The optical package may suitably include a container and a rail that fit within the container for receiving a plurality of mounted optical components. The rail may be secured within the container so that neither the rail nor the received mounted optical components move within the container. The optical package may further have at least one optical fiber termination mounted to the end of the container that is in optical communication with the optical components within the container. In methods according to the present invention, the optical package may be used for the transportation, operation, manufacturing and rapid prototyping of optical systems.

### Claim 13 (depends on 7)

The optical package of claim 7 wherein the optical fiber is in optical communication with optical processing equipment located outside of the container.

### Claim 14

A method for packaging optical systems utilizing mounted optical components, each of which mounted optical components includes an optical mount with at least one optical component disposed thereon, comprising the steps of:
(a) providing a container having an open end, and a rail that fits within the container for receiving the mounted optical components;

(c) closing the open end of the container.

### Claim 15

A method for prototyping, testing, manufacturing or packaging an optical system at a first location utilizing mounted optical components, each of which mounted optical components includes an optical mount with at least one optical component disposed thereon, comprising the steps of:
(a) providing a container having a body portion, and a rail that fits within the body portion of the container for receiving the mounted optical components;
