## Abstract

The subject invention pertains to novel methods and compositions utilizing novel fatty acid salts which exhibit excellent herbicidal activity in controlling unwanted vegetation. The novel compositions and methods described here facilitate effective weed control using a water soluble aliphatic amine salt of a fatty acid.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A process for controlling unwanted vegetation, said process comprising the application of a herbicidal composition wherein said composition comprises an aliphatic ammonium salt of a fatty acid, in a suitable agricultural carrier, wherein said fatty acid salt can be represented by the following formula:
R.sub.1 Y.sub.1 Y.sub.2 COOR.sub.2
wherein
R.sub.1 =C7 to C11 saturated hydrocarbon, or an epoxide, or cyclopropane thereof
Y.sub.1 =H, C1-C5 hydrocarbon, or hydroxyl at any position along R.sub.1
Y.sub.2 =H, C1-C5 hydrocarbon, or hydroxyl at any position along R.sub.1
R.sub.2 =a salt-forming moiety chosen from the group consisting of aliphatic amines which form aliphatic ammonium cations.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein isopropylamine is used to form said fatty acid salt.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein R.sub.1 is C8.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein R.sub.2 is an amine selected from the group consisting of tryptamine, n-amylamine, ethanolamine, n-hexylamine, sec-butylamine, dimethylamine, and isopropylamine.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The process, according to claim 4, wherein said amine is dimethylamine.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The process, according to claim 4, wherein said amine is ethanolamine.

### Claim 7 (depends on 4)

The process, according to claim 4, wherein said amine is sec-butylamine.

### Claim 8 (depends on 4)

The process, according to claim 4, wherein said amine is isopropylamine.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein the aliphatic ammonium cation is selected from the group consisting of monoalkylammonium, dialkylammonium, trialkylammonium, monoalkanolammonium, dialkanolammonium, trialkanolammonium, wherein said aliphatic ammonium group contains from 1 to about 18 carbon atoms.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein a mixture of C8, C9, and C10 fatty acid salts is used.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein said composition is an aqueous solution comprising a fatty acid and an aliphatic ammonium salt wherein the ratio of said fatty acid to said aliphatic ammonium salt is approximately 3:1.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein said composition further comprises a surfactant.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The process, according to claim 12, wherein said surfactant is a hydroxyl-containing surfactant.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein said fatty acid ammonium salt is applied at a concentration of 2%.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein the application of said composition results in about 80% control of the treated unwanted vegetation when a 2% active ingredient solution is applied at a rate of 100 gallons per acre.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein said process non-selectively controls unwanted vegetation.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The process, according to claim 1, wherein said fatty acid ammonium salt does not form esters when formulated with hydroxyl-containing surfactants.

### Claim 18

A process for controlling unwanted vegetation, said process comprising the application of a herbicidal composition that is a true aqueous solution consisting essentially of a saturated aliphatic ammonium salt of a C7 to C11 fatty acid, in a suitable agricultural carrier.
