Abstract
Iron binding polymers are provided for decreasing the absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal tract. The polymers are orally administered, and are useful for treatment of iron overload disorders.
Claims35
A method for removing iron from a patient comprising orally administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising at least one hydrophilic cross-linked aliphatic amine polymer.
A method for removing iron from a patient comprising administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of one or more crosslinked polymers comprising
- (1) a hydrophobic co-monomer and
- (2) a repeat unit having the formula ##STR65## or copolymer thereof, where n is an integer;
- R.sup.1 is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl group;
- M is ##STR66## or --Z--R.sub.2 ;
- Z is O, NR.sup.3, S, or (CH.sub.2).sub.m ;
- m=0-10;
- R.sup.3 is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl group;
- and R.sup.2 is ##STR67## where p=0-10 and each R.sup.4, R.sup.5, and R.sup.6, independently, is H, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl group, or an aryl group.
A method for removing iron from a patient comprising administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of the reaction product of:
- (a) one or more crosslinked polymers comprising a repeat unit having the formula:
- ##STR68## or copolymer thereof, where n is an integer;
- R.sup.1 is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl group;
- M is ##STR69## or --Z--R.sup.2 ;
- Z is O, NR.sup.3, S, or (CH.sub.2).sub.m ;
- m=0-10;
- R.sup.3 is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl group;
- and R.sup.2 is ##STR70## where p=0-10, and each R.sup.4, R.sup.5, and R.sup.6, independently, is H, an alkyl group, or an aryl group.
A method for removing iron from a patient comprising administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of the reaction product of:
- a) one or more crosslinked polymers characterized by a repeat unit selected from the group consisting of:
- ##STR71## and salts and copolymers thereof, where n is an integer and each R, independently, is H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl group;
- and
- b) at least one alkylating agent.
A method for removing iron from a patient comprising administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of an amine polymer, comprising:
- a) a first substituent, bound to an amine of the amine polymer, that includes a hydrophobic moiety;
- and
- b) a second substituent, bound to an amine of the amine polymer, that includes a quaternary amine-containing moiety.
A method for removing iron from a patient by ion exchange comprising administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount an amine polymer, comprising a substituent bound to an amine of the amine polymer, the substituent including a quaternary amine-containing moiety having at least one hydrophobic substituent.
