## Abstract

This invention relates to a method for detecting the flukicidal activity of a compound or compounds comprising feeding a portion of liver tissue of an animal treated with the compound or compounds to a free-living flatworm and observing the flatworm for mortality or morbidity.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for detecting flukicidal activity of a compound comprising the steps of:
(a) administering a non-lethal dosage of the compound to an animal;
(b) waiting a period of time sufficient to allow the compound to circulate to the animal's liver;
(c) dissecting the animal's liver;
(d) administering a portion of the dissected liver to a medium containing a free-living flatworm wherein the portion is of an amount sufficient for the flatworm to feed upon;
(e) observing the flatworm for feeding upon the dissected liver and;
(f) observing the flatworm for the presence of mortality or morbidity.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the animal is a gerbil.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the free-living flatworms are fresh-water planaria.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the planaria are selected from the group consisting of Dugesia tigrina and Phagocata morgani.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein step (a) is conducted by administering the compound in the animal's diet for a period of about four days.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein step (a) is conducted parenterally or by oral gavage.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6, wherein step (c) is conducted from about two hours to about twenty-four hours after step (a).

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the medium is sterilized pond water.
