A two phase HfB.sub.2 --SiB.sub.4 material which is useful as a high tempture oxidation resistant coating.

A two phase HfB.sub.2 --SiB.sub.4 ceramic material comprising a HfB.sub.2 phase and a SiB.sub.4 phase wherein the material comprises from more than zero to less than 100 mole percent HfB.sub.2 with the remainder of the material being SiB.sub.4.
A two phase HfB.sub.2 --SiB.sub.4 ceramic coating composition comprising a HfB.sub.2 phase and a SiB.sub.4 phase wherein the coating comprises from more than zero to less than 100 mole percent HfB.sub.2 with the remainder of the coating being SiB.sub.4.
