Abstract
A laser diode module includes a laser diode emitting a laser beam, and a lens for collimating the laser beam. The lens is tilted with respect to an optical axis along which the laser beam is propagated.
Claims38
A laser diode module comprising:
- a laser diode emitting a laser beam along an optical axis;
- a base which holds the laser diode and has a mounting surface parallel to the optical axis of the laser diode;
- a lens for collimating the laser beam and having a lens axis;
- a lens holder slidably mounted on the mounting surface of the base and which holds the lens with the lens axis thereof aligned substantially with the optical axis, the lens, further, having a transverse axis passing through the center of the lens, transverse to and forming an intersection with the optical axis, the optical and transverse axes defining a first reference plane, a second transverse axis, transverse to the reference plane, passing through the intersection;
- a mechanism mounted on the base and which selectively tilts the lens holder with respect to the mounting surface of the base thereby to selectively adjust the tilt angle of the lens;
- and
- said lens being selectively tilted about the first transverse axis to a selected tilt angle, relative to the second transverse axis, at which a minimum beam spot of the laser beam, at a focus position along the optical axis, is achieved at the focus position of the beam spot in both first and second directions, each thereof perpendicular to the optical axis and respectively parallel to the first and second transverse axes.

A laser diode module comprising:
- a base defining a base optical axis and first and second mounting surfaces displaced along the base optical axis by a selected axial distance;
- a laser diode supported on the first mounting surface and emitting a laser beam along the base optical axis;
- a holder supported on the second mounting surface and holding a lens, having a lens optical axis, centered on the base optical axis and displaced from the laser diode by a selected axial distance, the holder providing for selective tilting of the lens and thereby selectively varying a tilt angle of the lens optical axis relatively to the base optical axis;
- and
- a mechanism maintaining the lens at a selected angle which, with the lens at the selected axial distance from the laser diode, produces a minimum beam spot of the laser beam, at a focus position along the base optical axis, in both of first and second mutually perpendicular directions, each direction being perpendicular to the base optical axis.

A laser diode module comprising:
- a base defining an upper, planar mounting surface;
- a lens supported on the base in alignment with an optical axis parallel to the upper, planar mounting surface;
- a laser diode emitting a laser beam along the optical axis;
- a holder having a lower planar mounting surface supported on, and moveable in sliding relationship relatively to, the upper planar mounting surface of the base to a selected holder position and which holds a selected one of the laser diode and the lens at a selected position relatively to, and displaced by a selected distance from, the other of the laser diode and the lens, along the optical axis;
- and
- a mechanism interconnecting the base and the holder and maintaining the lens holder and thereby the lens at a selected tilt angle with respect to the upper planar mounting surface of the base and at the selected distance along the base optical axis, between the lens and the laser diode, minimizing the beam size in one of horizontal and vertical directions relative to the optical axis.
