The present invention provides a process for the production of glyoxals which comprises effecting the oxidative dehydrogenation of a glycol at a temperature of 400.degree. to 700.degree. C. in the presence of a silver-based catalyst composed of silver and at least one element selected from the group consisting of gold, platinum, rhodium and palladium, and phosphorus or a phosphorus compound, as well as such catalysts. These process and catalysts make it possible to produce high-quality glyoxals in high yield and with industrial advantages while minimizing the contents of unreacted raw material and reaction intermediates such as glycolaldehyde and acetol.
A process for producing glyoxal which comprises conducting oxidative dehydrogenation of a glycol at a temperature of 400.degree. to 700.degree. C. in the presence of a silver-based catalyst and phosphorus or a phosphorus compound, wherein the silver-based catalyst is composed of i) silver particles coated partially with at least one element selected from the group consisting of gold, platinum, rhodium and palladium or ii) particles of a silver supporting inert carrier wherein at least one element selected from the group consisting of gold, platinum, rhodium and palladium is supported on the surface of the particles, and wherein the phosphorus or the phosphorus compound is mixed with the glycol prior to conducting said oxidative dehydrogenation or is added to the process separately from the glycol.
