## Abstract

A porous lithium aluminate carrier for catalyst has a spinel structure which has a mean pore diameter in the range of 40 to 1,000 angstroms and a total pore volume in the range of 0.2 to 1.5 mL/g. The porous lithium aluminate carrier can be used for supporting a catalyst compound containing a platinum group metal. The catalyst on the carrier can be favorably employed for promoting catalytic reaction of a nitrite ester and carbon monoxide to prepare a carbonate diester such as dimethyl carbonate.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A process for the preparation of a carbonate diester which comprises reacting a nitrite ester and carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst composition which comprises a carrier of a spinel structure having a mean pore diameter in the range of 40 to 1,000 angstroms and a total pore volume in the range of 0.2 to 1.5 mL/g and a catalyst component comprising a compound of a metal of platinum group.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The process for the preparation of a carbonate diester of claim 1, in which the carbonate diester is a dialkyl carbonate and the nitrite ester is an alkyl nitrite.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The process for the preparation of a carbonate diester of claim 1, in which the carbonate diester is dimethyl carbonate and the nitrite ester is methyl nitrite.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the reaction is performed further in the presence of a chlorine-containing gas.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the reaction is performed further in the presence of hydrogen chloride.
