A process of making azithromycin, comprising reducing a compound of formula III ##STR9## to a compound of formula IV ##STR10## and thereafter N-methylating the said compound of formula IV at position 9a.
A method of making a compound having formula III ##STR11## comprising treating a compound of formula VI comprising treating the E-isomer of formula VI ##STR12## with tosyl chloride in the presence of pyridine at a temperature less than about -10.degree. C.
A process of making a compound having formula III ##STR13## comprising dissolving a compound of formula V ##STR14## in a solvent for a time sufficient to produce said compound of formula III.
