Abstract
A method for the treatment of mitochondrial diseases, including Kearns-Sayre syndrome, MERRF syndrome, MELAS syndrome and Leber's disease, is carried out by administering to a patient in need of treatment an effective amount of riluzole or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

A method for the treatment of at least one mitochondrial disease, said method comprising administering to a patient in recognized need of said treatment an amount of riluzole or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof effective for the treatment of said at least one mitochondrial disease.
