Abstract
Invented are 17.alpha. and 17.beta.-substituted acyl-3-carboxy-3,5-diene analogues of steroidal synthetic compounds, pharmaceutical compositions containing these compounds, and methods for using these compounds to inhibit steroid 5-.alpha.-reductase. Also invented are intermediates and processes used in preparing these compounds.

A compound represented by the Formula ##STR35## in which R is a C.sub.6 -aryl substituted with one or more halogens and pharmaceutically acceptable salts, hydrates, solvates and esters thereof.
