Herbicidal ribofuranose derivatives

A compound of the formula ##STR11## wherein R, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently H and lower alkylcarbonyl;

• X.sub.1 is H;
• X is --SC(O)R.sub.3, --OSO.sub.2 R.sub.3, --OPO.sub.3 (R.sub.7).sub.2, N.sub.3, R.sub.4 R.sub.5 NO, --ONO.sub.2, --P(O)R.sub.6 OH, --CHX.sub.2 PO.sub.3 H.sub.2, or CHX.sub.2 P(O)R.sub.6 OH;
• R.sub.3 is lower alkyl or lower haloalkyl;
• R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are independently H and lower alkylcarbonyl or R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 taken together form phthaloyl;
• R.sub.6 is H, OH or lower alkyl;
• R.sub.7 is H, alkali or alkaline earth cation, ammonium cation or substituted ammonium cation;
• and
• X.sub.2 is H or halogen.

A compound of the formula ##STR12## wherein R is acetyl;

• R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently acetyl or H;
• X.sub.1 is hydrogen or fluoro;
• X is halogen, --SC(O)R.sub.3, --OPO.sub.3 H.sub.2, --OPO.sub.3 Na.sub.2, --OSO.sub.2 R.sub.3, --ONO.sub.2, N.sub.3, --P(O)R.sub.6 OH and R.sub.4 R.sub.5 NO;
• R.sub.3 is CH.sub.3 or CF.sub.3 ;
• R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 taken together form phthaloyl and R.sub.6 is H, OH or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) alkyl.
