Claims23
An electrorheological fluid comprising:
- (a) a carbon-based hydrophobic base fluid selected from the group consisting of synthetic hydrocarbon fluids;
- (b) electrorheologically active solid particles;
- and
- (c) an aromatic hydroxy compound substituted with a hydrocarbyl group containing at least 9 carbon atoms.
A process for improving the dispersive stability of an electrorheological fluid of a carbon-based hydrophobic base fluid selected from the group consisting of synthetic hydrocarbon fluids, and electrorheologically active solid particles, said process comprising adding to the electrotheological fluid an aromatic hydroxy compound substituted with a hydrocarbyl group containing at least about 9 carbon atoms.
A method for increasing the apparent viscosity of a fluid comprising
- (a) a carbon-based hydrophobic base fluid selected from the group consisting of synthetic hydrocarbon fluids;
- (b) electrotheologically active solid particles;
- and
- (c) an aromatic hydroxy compound substituted with a hydrocarbyl group containing at least 9 carbon atoms
- said method comprising subjecting the fluid to an electric field.
An electrotheological fluid comprising:
- (a) a hydrogenated polyalphaolefin;
- (b) electrorheologically active solid particles;
- and
- (c) an aromatic hydroxy compound substituted with a hydrocarbyl group containing at least 9 carbon atoms.
