Abstract
A universal controller for controlling a plurality of types of continuous passive motion (CPM) devices includes a control panel. Input keys are located within the control panel and provide input parameters which define the limits of operation and modes of operation for a particular CPM device. A microprocessor processes the received input parameters and controls the operation of the particular type of CPM device. Sensors located within the CPM device determine the instantaneous state of the particular CPM device and determine the specific type of CPM device. CPM operating parameters associated with the particular CPM device are stored within a data retention area of the microprocessor. A timer determines time measurements for time dependent calculations.
Claims62
A method for controlling a continuous passive motion (CPM) orthosis device having articulating elements forming a pivot joint for providing therapy to a user's joint, comprising the steps of:
- (a) applying a first force to the articulating elements to provide motion of said user's joint by said CPM device;
- (b) determining whether a predetermined time period has elapsed and terminating said first force when said predetermined time period has elapsed;
- (c) determining whether said user is applying an opposing force to said CPM device at least equal to said first force and terminating said motion, while maintaining the first force, in response to said at least equal opposing force;
- and
- (d) determining whether said orthosis device is disposed at a predetermined limit position and terminating said first force when said orthosis device is disposed at said limit position.
An apparatus for controlling a continuous passive motion (CPM) device for providing therapy to a user, comprising:
- an orthosis device for applying a first force to a joint of a user by said CPM device to provide motion of said joint;
- means for terminating said first force when a predetermined time period has elapsed;
- means for terminating said motion, while maintaining the first force, when said user applies an opposing force to said CPM device equal to said first force;
- and
- means for terminating said first force when said orthosis device is disposed at a predetermined limit position.
A method for exercising a joint of a user by reciprocating movement of articulating elements of an orthosis device applied to said joint, comprising the steps of:
- (a) determining a first range of motion of an articulating element of said orthosis device;
- (b) moving said articulating element over a second range of motion smaller than said first range of motion;
- and
- (c) gradually extending said second range of motion over successive reciprocating movements to approach said first range of motion.
An apparatus for exercising a joint of a user by providing reciprocating movement of an orthosis device applied to said joint, comprising:
- means for providing a first range of motion of an articulating element of said orthosis device;
- means for moving said articulating element over a second range of motion smaller than said first range of motion;
- and
- means for gradually extending said second range of motion over successive reciprocating movements to approach said first range of motion.
The apparatus for exercising a joint of a user of claim 64, comprising means for preventing movement of said articulating element through an angle greater than a limit angle.
A method for controlling a continuous passive motion (CPM) device including articulating elements having a true zero angular position and a defined zero angular position, comprising the steps of:
- (a) disposing one said articulating element of said orthosis device at said defined zero angular position;
- (b) first determining a first orthosis angular position by said elements while said one articulating element is disposed at said defined zero angular position;
- (c) determining an offset angle in accordance with first determined orthosis angular position and said true zero angular position;
- (d) second determining a second orthosis angular position;
- and
- (e) offsetting said second determined orthosis angular position in accordance with said offset angle to provide a corrected orthosis angular position.
An apparatus for controlling a continuous passive motion (CPM) device including an orthosis device having a true zero angular position and a defined zero angular position, comprising:
- an articulating element of said orthosis device disposed at said defined zero angular position;
- a first orthosis angular position determined by said disposing of said articulating element at said defined zero angular position;
- an offset angle determined in accordance with said orthosis angular position and said true zero angular position;
- a second orthosis angular position determined by disposing said articulating element at a further position;
- and
- means for offsetting said second determined orthosis angular position in accordance with said offset angle to provide a corrected orthosis angular position.
