Abstract
Compositions having good low temperature impact performance made from a thermoplastic (e.g., a polyolefin such as polypropylene) and either at least one linear ethylene/C.sub.5 -C.sub.20 .alpha.-olefin or at least one substantially linear ethylene/C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 .alpha.-olefin polymer are disclosed. The compositions are easily molded and have particular utility in making automotive facia, parts and other household articles.
Claims14
A thermoplastic olefinic polymer composition having a Dynatup impact performance of at least about 30 ft-lbs at a temperature of -20.degree. F. comprising:
- (A) a thermoplastic selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polyurethanes, polyvinyl chlorides, styrenics, polycarbonate, thermoplastic polyester, polyamides, polyacetals, polysulfones, and polyolefins,
- (B) about 30 percent by weight of at least one substantially linear ethylene/.alpha.-olefin/diene interpolymer characterized as having:
- a) a melt flow ratio, I.sub.10 /I.sub.2, .gtoreq.5.63,
- b) a molecular weight distribution, M.sub.w /M.sub.n, defined by the equation:
- M.sub.w /M.sub.n .ltoreq.(I.sub.10 /I.sub.2)-4.63, and
- c) a critical shear rate at onset of surface melt fracture of at least 50 percent greater than the critical shear rate at the onset of surface melt fracture of a linear ethylene/.alpha.-olefin/diene polymer having about the same I.sub.2 and M.sub.w /M.sub.n.
A thermoplastic olefinic polymer composition having a Dynatup impact performance of at least about 30 ft-lbs at a temperature of -20.degree. F. comprising:

- (B) about 30 percent by weight of at least one substantially linear ethylene/.alpha.-olefin/diene interpolymer characterized as having:
- a) a melt flow ratio, I.sub.10 /I.sub.2, .gtoreq.5.63,
- b) a molecular weight distribution, M.sub.w /M.sub.n, defined by the equation:
- M.sub.w /M.sub.n .ltoreq.(I.sub.10 /I.sub.2)-4.63, and
- c) a processing index less than or equal to about 70 percent of the PI of a linear ethylene/.alpha.-olefin/diene polymer having about the same I.sub.2 and M.sub.w /M.sub.n.
