Abstract
A method for automatically analyzing the morphometry of bones from data obtained by lateral digital scans of the bone obtains a matrix of data values assembled from an x-ray scan. The matrix is analyzed to locate an axis of the bone from which subsequent measures may be referenced. Once the axis is fixed, one or more of several useful indicia of bone condition such a length or interbone spacing can be calculated. The measures are compared to a set of reference values that has been normalized to lumbar vertebrae of the patient.
Claims6
A method of evaluating the integrity against fracture of a vertebra in an animal or human, the vertebra having a superior and inferior margin and anterior and posterior margin, comprising the steps of:
- (a) scanning the vertebra with a beam of radiation to acquire a matrix of discrete data elements each having a value wherein each said data element corresponds to a defined location in the area of said vertebra, and wherein the value of each data element is related to a physical property of the material of the vertebra or its surrounding tissue;
- (b) reviewing the values of the data elements and their defined locations to identify at the edge of the vertebra one or more pairs of fiduciary points and measuring the distance between the points to produce a morphometric measure;
- (c) measuring the absorption of the beam of radiation through the vertebra to produce a value related to the bone mass of the vertebra;
- and
- (d) displaying the morphometric measure and the value related to the bone mass of the vertebra so as to indicate the likelihood of future vertebral fractures in the vertebra.
A method of evaluating the osteoporosis in a vertebra in an animal or human, the vertebra having a superior and inferior margin and anterior and posterior margin, comprising the steps of:
- (a) scanning the vertebra with a beam of radiation to acquire a matrix of discrete data elements each having a value wherein each said data element corresponds to a defined location in the area of said vertebra, and wherein the value of each data element is related to a physical property of the material of the vertebra or its surrounding tissue;
- (b) reviewing the values of the data elements and their defined locations to identify at the edge of the vertebra one or more pairs of fiduciary points and measuring the distance between the points to produce a mophometric measure;
- (c) measuring the absorption of the beam of radiation through the vertebra to produce a value related to the bone mass of the vertebra;
- and
- (d) displaying the morphometric measure of the value related to the bone mass and the vertebra so as to indicate an osteoporotic condition of the vertebra.
