Abstract

New classes of 1,3,5-triazine compounds and compositions containing the same are disclosed, which compounds are of the general formula ##STR1## wherein each of Y, Z and optionally X are independently selected from a group of the formula (II), (III) and/or (IV) ##STR2## These compounds and compositions are particularly suitable for use as crosslinking agents in curable compositions such as coatings, particularly in combination with active hydrogen groups-containing materials. The 1,3,5-triazine compounds of the present invention do not release formaldehyde as a volatile by-product during cure, and certain of these compounds may be used in curable compositions which may be cured at relatively low temperature. Processes for preparing such compounds, compositions containing the same, as well as additional uses thereof, are also disclosed.

A compound represented by the formula (I):

##STR9## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aralkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, aralkylthio, arylthio, amido, sulfonamido, sulfonate, amino, heterocyclic N-containing groups optionally containing a different hetero atom in the ring a group of the formula (II), a group of the formula (III), and a group of the formula (IV) ##STR10## wherein A is an alkylene group of 1 t0 8 carbon atoms,
R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and a hydrocarbyl,
R.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl, --OR.sup.9 and --SR.sup.10,
R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl, --OR.sup.9 and --SR.sup.10, and
R.sup.4 is selected from the group consisting of --OR.sup.11 and --SR.sup.12,
with the proviso that at least one of R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of --OR.sup.9 and --SR.sup.10, ##STR11## wherein D is an alkylene group of 3 to 8 carbon atoms,
R.sup.5 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl, --OR.sup.9 and --SR.sup.10, and
R.sup.6 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl, --OR.sup.9 and --SR.sup.10,
with the proviso that at least one of R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 is selected from the group consisting of --OR.sup.9 and --SR.sup.10, ##STR12## wherein Q is an alkylene group of 2 to 7 carbon atoms,
R.sup.7 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl, --OR.sup.9 and --SR.sup.10, and
R.sup.8 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and a hydrocarbyl,
wherein
each R.sup.9 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and a hydrocarbyl, or together with R.sup.11 forms a hydrocarbylene group,
each R.sup.10 is a hydrocarbyl, or together with R.sup.12 forms a hydrocarbylene group,
each R.sup.11 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and a hydrocarbyl, or together with R.sup.9 forms a hydrocarbylene group,
each R.sup.12 is a hydrocarbyl, or together with R.sup.10 forms a hydrocarbylene group,
with the proviso that, other than in a group of the formula (II), (III) or (IV), X contains no olefinic unsaturation;
and
wherein
each of Y and Z is independently selected from the group consisting of a group of the formula (II), a group of the formula (III) and a group of the formula (IV).

(ii) a nucleophilic reagent selected from the group consisting of a compound of the formula (VI), a compound of the formula (VII), a compound of the formula (VIII), a salt thereof and mixtures thereof:

(ii) a nucleophilic reagent of the formula (VI) or a salt thereof, ##STR23## wherein A, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are as defined above, with the proviso that at least one of R.sup.2 R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of --OR.sup.9 and --SR.sup.10, wherein R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are as defined above,
at a temperature and for a length of time sufficient to produce a 1,3,5-triazine derivative having thereon on average at least two open-chain groups derived from the nucleophilic agent;
then (b) intramolecularly cyclizing at least a portion of the open-chain groups to groups of the formula (III).
