Abstract
The present invention is a method of preventing or ameliorating the episodic recurrence of MS, comprising administering an effective amount of selective phosphodiesterase inhibitors of Type IV, e.g., Rolipram, e.g., wherein the severity of the episodic recurrences is ameliorated or the time period between episodes is lengthened.
Claims32
A method of treating multiple sclerosis, comprising administering to a host in need thereof an effective amount of a compound according to formula I ##STR2## wherein:
- R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each are alike or different and are C.sub.1-18 -alkyl with at least one being other than methyl, a heterocyclic ring, or C.sub.1-5 -alkyl substituted by one or more of halogen atoms, hydroxy, carboxy, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl or an amino group;
- R' is a hydrogen atom, alkyl, aryl or acyl;
- and X is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom.
A method of treating multiple sclerosis comprising administering to a host in need thereof an effective amount of a Type IV phosphodiesterase inhibitor.
A method of treating multiple sclerosis comprising administering to a human in need thereof an effective amount of 4-(3-cyclopentyloxy)-4-methoxyphenyl!-2-pyrrolidinone.
A method of preventing the recurrence of or treating multiple sclerosis, comprising administering to a host in need thereof an effective amount of a compound according to formula I ##STR3## wherein:
- R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each are alike or different and are C.sub.1-18 -alkyl with at least one being other than methyl, a heterocyclic ring, or C.sub.1-5 -alkyl substituted by one or more of halogen atoms, hydroxy, carboxy, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl or an amino group;
- R' is a hydrogen atom, alkyl, aryl or acyl;
- and X is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom.
