Abstract
A binder is applied to fibers to bind particles to the fibers. The fibers have hydrogen bonding functional groups. The particles have functional groups capable of forming a hydrogen bond or a coordinate covalent bond. The binder comprises binder molecules, the binder molecules having at least one functional group that is capable of forming a hydrogen bond or a coordinate covalent bond with the particles, and at least one functional group that is capable of forming a hydrogen bond with the fibers. A substantial portion of the particles that are adhered to the fibers are adhered in particulate form by hydrogen bonds or coordinate covalent bonds to the binder, and the binder is in turn adhered to the fibers by hydrogen bonds. Fibers containing particles bound by this method are easily densified.
Claims36
A fibrous product made by the method comprising the steps:
- providing fibrous material comprising individualized fibers having a hydrogen bonding functionality;
- providing particles having a hydrogen bonding functionality or a coordinate covalent bond forming functionality;
- selecting a binder from the group consisting of glycerin, a glycerin monoester, a glycerin diester, a propylene glycol, urea, and combinations thereof, the binder comprising binder molecules, the binder molecules having at least one functional group capable of forming a hydrogen bond or a coordinate covalent bond with the particles, and at least one functional group capable of forming a hydrogen bond with the fibrous materials;
- and
- exposing at least a portion of the particles to sufficient amounts of the binder in the presence of the fibrous material to bind at least a portion of the particles to the fibrous material.
A fibrous product comprising:
- individualized fibers having hydrogen bonding functionalities;
- and
- a binder selected from the group consisting of glycerin, a glycerin monoester, a glycerin diester, a propylene glycol, urea and combinations thereof, the binder comprising binder molecules, the binder molecules having at least one functional group capable of forming a hydrogen bond or a coordinate covalent bond with particles having a hydrogen bonding or a coordinate covalent bond forming functionality, and at least one functional group capable of forming a hydrogen bond with the fibrous material, wherein at least a portion of the particles can be bound to the fibrous material.
A fibrous product comprising:
- fibrous material comprising individualized fibers having a hydrogen bonding functionality;
- particles having a hydrogen bonding or a coordinate covalent bond forming functionality;
- and
- a binder selected from the group consisting of glycerin, a glycerin monoester, a glycerin diester, a propylene glycol, urea, and combinations thereof, the binder comprising binder molecules, the binder molecules having at least one functional group capable of forming a hydrogen bond or a coordinate covalent bond with the particles, and at least one functional group capable of forming a hydrogen bond with the fibrous material, wherein at least a portion of the particles are bound to the fibrous material.
Binder coated fibers that will adhere to particles having a hydrogen bonding functional site or a coordinate covalent bonding functional site, comprising:
- individualized fibers that have a hydrogen-bonding functional site;
- and
- a binder selected from the group consisting of glycerin, a glycerin monoester, a glycerin diester, urea, a propylene glycol, and combinations thereof, the binder comprising binder molecules, the binder molecules having a functional group that is capable of forming at least one hydrogen bond with the fibers, and at least one functional group that is capable of forming a hydrogen bond or coordinate-covalent bond with particles, the binder being present in a sufficient amount to bond at least a portion of the particles to the fibers.
A fiber product produced by the method comprising the steps of:
- providing fibrous material comprising individualized fibers having a hydrogen bonding functionality;
- providing particles having a hydrogen bonding functionality or a coordinate covalent bond forming functionality;
- selecting a binder from the group consisting of glycerin, a glycerin monoester, a glycerin diester, a propylene glycol, urea, and combinations thereof, the binder comprising binder molecules, the binder molecules having at least one functional group capable of forming a hydrogen bond or a coordinate covalent bond with the particles, and at least one functional group capable of forming a hydrogen bond with the fibrous material;
- and
- spraying the binder on the fibers as the particles are being combined with the fibrous material, the binder being sprayed in sufficient amounts to bind a substantial portion of the particles to the fibrous material.
A fiber product produced by the method comprising the steps of:
- providing fibrous material comprising individualized fibers having a hydrogen bonding functionality;
- providing particles having a hydrogen bonding or a coordinate covalent bond forming functionality;
- selecting a binder from the group consisting of glycerin, a glycerin monoester, a glycerin diester, urea, and combinations thereof;
- and
- exposing at least a portion of the particles to sufficient amounts of the binder in the presence of the fibrous material under conditions that favor the formation of non-covalent bonds to bind at least a portion of the particles to the fibrous material.
