N-Arylalkylphenylacetamide derivatives

A N-arylalkylphenylacetamide compound of formula (I) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof:

• ##STR7## wherein:
• X is hydroxy or methoxy;
• Y is hydroxy;
• or NR.sup.1 R.sup.2 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, which may be the same or different, are independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-3 alkyl, C.sub.1-3 hydroxyalkyl, C.sub.1-3 aminoalkyl, formyl, C.sub.1-3 alkylcarbonyl, C.sub.1-3 alkoxycarbonyl, arylalkoxycarbonyl, aryl, or aroyl, with the proviso that both R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are not simultaneously hydrogen, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may form a heterocyclic ring containing one or more heteroatoms together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached;
• Z, which may be the same or different when p is greater than 1, is hydrogen, halogen, methylenedioxy, trifluoromethyl, or C.sub.1-5 alkyl;
• n is an integer ranging from 2 to 4;
• and
• p is an integer ranging from 1 to 5.
