A compound of the formula (I)
- wherein A.sup.1, A.sup.2 and A.sup.3 are the same or different and each is alkyl containing up to 3 carbon atoms, benzyl, or H--(Alk--O).sub.1-3 --Alk-- wherein Alk signifies --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH(CH.sub.3)CH.sub.2 --, or --CH.sub.2 CH(CH.sub.3)--, provided further that A.sup.1, can be --(CH.sub.2).sub.1-3 COO.sup.- and that A.sup.3 can be hydrogen;
- R.sup.b is --Alk--(O--Alk).sub.2-6 ;
- R.sup.c is --Alk--(O--Alk).sub.2-6 ;
- a is 2 to 6;
- D is methyl, ethyl, propyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.1-3 COO.sup.-, or benzyl;
- i is 0 or 1 and j is 1, provided that the sum of (i+j) is 1 or 2;
- and provided that if i is 0 then A.sup.1 and D cannot both be --(CH.sub.2).sub.1-3 COO--;
- X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are independently YC(O)O-- or YOC(O)-- wherein Y is a straight or branched saturated or unsaturated aliphatic group containing up to 3 carbon-carbon double bonds and containing 11 to 23 carbon atoms;
- n is ((i+j) minus the number of --(CH.sub.2).sub.1-3 COO.sup.- substituents present);
- and
- Z is an anion.
