Abstract
Coal is treated aerobically or anaerobically to produce humic acid, volatile fatty acids, lower alcohols, and/or methane using a consortium of bacteria designated Mic-1 or KSARC56. This process can also be used to convert aromatic compounds, such as phenols and derivatives thereof, to methane and carbon dioxide.
Claims10
A method for producing humic acid from coal comprising introducing coal into a medium containing an anaerobic culture Mic-1, ATCC 55801, for a minimum period of time to convert said coal to humic acid.
A method for producing humic acid, methane gas, and volatile fatty acids from coal comprising introducing coal into a medium containing an anaerobic culture Mic-1 for a minimum period of time to convert said coal to humic acid, methane gas, volatile fatty acids, and lower alcohols.
A method for producing methane gas from coal comprising introducing coal into a medium containing an anaerobic culture Mic-1 for a minimum period of time to convert said coal to methane gas.
