Abstract
Acrylate-only and epoxy-acrylate thermoset resins exhibit high temperature damping behavior. These materials are suitable for damping vibrations in structures and component parts of devices where high temperature performance is required, such as in automobiles, aircraft, industrial equipment and appliances.
Claims9
A method for damping the vibration of a vibrating solid article at temperatures in the range of -20.degree. to 200.degree. C. at 1 Hz, wherein said method comprises providing a viscoelastic layer construction with at least one layer comprising a cured epoxy-acrylate thermosetting resin consisting essentially of an interpenetrating network of polymerized epoxy monomers and polymerized acrylate monomers.
A process for free layer damping comprising:
- a. coating a release liner with a layer of epoxy-acrylate resin composition comprising at least one acrylate monomer, at least one epoxy monomer, a free radical initiator, and a cationic initiator;
- b. curing said composition into a viscoelastic layer;
- c. fixedly mounting said viscoelastic layer to a vibratory article that is to be damped;
- and
- d. removing said release liner.
A process for free layer damping comprising:
- a. coating a vibratory article that is to be damped with a layer of an epoxy-acrylate thermoset resin composition comprising at least one acrylate monomer, at least one epoxy monomer, a free radical initiator, and a cationic initiator;
- and
- b. curing said composition into a viscoelastic layer in situ to form a free layer vibration-damping construction.
A process for constrained layer damping comprising:
- a. coating a release liner with a layer of an epoxy-acrylate thermoset resin composition comprising at least one acrylate monomer, at least one epoxy monomer, a free radical initiator, and a cationic initiator;
- b. curing said composition into a viscoelastic layer;
- c. transferring said viscoelastic layer from said release liner to a substrate, so as to adhere said viscoelastic layer to said substrate to form a constrained-layer vibration damping construction;
- and
- d. fixedly mounting the constrained layer vibration-damping construction to a vibratory article that is to be damped.
A process for constrained layer damping comprising:
- a. coating a vibratory article that is to be damped with a layer of an epoxy-acrylate thermoset resin composition comprising at least one acrylate monomer, at least one epoxy monomer, a free radical initiator, and a cationic initiator;
- b. curing said composition into a viscoelastic layer in situ to form a constrained-layer vibration-damping construction;
- and
- c. fixedly mounting the constrained layer vibration-damping construction to a vibratory article that is to be damped.
