Abstract
Hydroxy-terminated poly(2,2-dinitropropyl)polynitroorthocarbonate prepolys of the formula ##STR1## which are prepared by reacting bis(2,2-dinitropropyl)dichloroformal with a diol of the formula ##STR2## wherein n>1, and wherein W, X, Y, and Z vary independently and are F or NO.sub.2, and wherein --A-- is --CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CF.sub.2 --, --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 --, --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 --, --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 OCF.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 --, or --CH.sub.2 N(NO.sub.2)CH.sub.2 --. These prepolymers are reacted with curing agents (e.g., polyisocyanates) to form energetic polymeric binders.
Claims8
An energetic polymer comprising the reaction product of
- (1) a hydroxy-terminated poly(2,2-dinitropropyl)polynitroorthocarbonate prepolymer of the formula ##STR9## wherein n>1, X is selected from the group consisting of F and NO.sub.2, and wherein when X is F, --A-- is selected from the group consisting of --CF.sub.2 --, --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 --, --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 --, and --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 --, but when X is NO.sub.2, --A-- is selected from the group consisting of --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 --, and --CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 --,
- (2) with a polyisocyanate selected from the group consisting of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate, 2,6-toluene diisocyanate, p-phenylene diisocyanate, 1,5-naphthylene diisocyanate, 4,4'-biphenylene diisocyanate, p,p'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, 1,4-tetramethylene diisocyanate, 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate, 1,10-decamethylene diisocyanate, 1,4-cyclohexylene diisocyanate, 4,4'-methylene-bis-cyclohexyl isocyanate, 1,5tetrahydronaphthylene diisocyanate, polymethylenepolyphenylisocyanate, N,N',N"-trisisocyanatohexylbiuret, and mixtures thereof,
- wherein the ratio of isocyanate functional groups to hydroxy functional groups is from 0.8:1 to 1.5:1.
