Abstract
An alkali metal electrochemical cell having the cathode comprising at least two distinct active mixtures having differing formulations of a discharge promoter component mixed with electrode active material, is described. The active mixture contacting the current collector has a greater percentage of the discharge promoter component than the remainder of the cathode, and a preferred electrode active material is fluorinated carbon.
Claims43
An electrochemical cell, which comprises:
- (a) an anode;
- (b) a cathode comprising:
- i) a current collector;
- ii) a first active mixture contacting the current collector and comprising a first percentage of a first discharge promoter component mixed with at least one first electrode active material;
- and
- iii) a second active mixture contacting the first active mixture and comprising a second percentage of a second discharge promoter component mixed with at least one second electrode active material, wherein the first percentage of the first discharge promoter component is greater than the second percentage of the second discharge promoter component;
- and
- (c) an electrolyte activating and operatively associating the anode and the cathode.
A cathode for an electrochemical cell, the cathode comprising:
- a) a current collector;
- b) a first active mixture contacting the current collector and comprising a first percentage of a first discharge promoter component mixed with at least one first electrode active material;
- and
- c) a second active mixture contacting the first active mixture and comprising a second percentage of at least one second discharge promoter component mixed with a second electrode active material, wherein the first percentage of the first discharge promoter component is greater than the second percentage of the second discharge promoter component.
A method of providing a cathode comprising the steps of:
- a) providing a current collector;
- b) preparing a first active mixture by mixing together a first percentage of a first discharge promoter component with at least one first electrode active material;
- c) preparing a second active mixture by mixing together a second percentage of a second discharge promoter component with at least one second electrode active material, wherein the first percentage of the first discharge promoter component is greater than the second percentage of the second discharge promoter component;
- d) contacting the current collector with the first active mixture;
- and
- e) contacting the first active mixture with the second active mixture.
A method of providing an electrochemical cell, comprising the steps of:
- a) providing a casing;
- b) providing an anode;
- c) providing a cathode current collector;
- d) preparing a first active mixture by mixing together a first percentage of a first discharge promoter component with at least one first electrode active material;
- e) preparing a second active mixture by mixing together a second percentage of a second discharge promoter component with at least one second electrode active material, and wherein the first percentage of the first discharge promoter component is greater than the second percentage of the second discharge promoter component;
- f) contacting the cathode current collector with the first active mixture;
- g) contacting the first active mixture with the second active mixture to thereby provide a cathode;
- h) operatively associating the anode with the cathode housed inside the casing with the anode and the cathode connected to respective terminals;
- and
- i) activating the anode and the cathode with an electrolyte filled into the casing.
